In
addition to the thousands of books on various turf and field sports,
the National Sporting Library also possesses a large collection
of organizational records, personal papers, scrapbooks, photographs
and photograph albums, and original pedigree albums. These collections,
which range in volume from one slim ledgerbook to several cubic
feet of papers, pertain to such renowned sporting personages as
F. Ambrose Clark, Alexander Henry Higginson, Alexander Mackay-Smith,
and Harry Worcester Smith. Also included are the hunting diaries
and business papers of such hunts as the Nantucket Harriers, the
Buckram Beagles, the Piedmont Hunt, the Treweryn Beagles, and
the Warrenton Hunt.
The NSL's
Archives and Manuscripts Collections allow patrons to catch a
more intimate glimpse of sporting life through the years through
firsthand personal diaries, letters, and scrapbooks. Visitors
can also pour through decades of organizational business papers
to follow the evolution of a particular hunt or sporting associations,
These
collections are open to use by any visitor, but the materials
may only be used onsite and under the supervision of the librarian
or archivist. In order to facilitate access to the NSL's collections,
a brief description of each collection has been provided on this
