STEEPLECHASING:
A Complete History of the Sport in North America
By Peter Winants

The Derrydale Press in collaboration with the
National Steeplechase Foundation, 2000.
The
National Sporting Library takes immense pride in the recently
published book Steeplechasing: A Complete History of the Sport
in North America by Peter Winants, director of the Library
from 1991-1998.
Winants
drew on his love of the sport and a lifetime of experience to
write this authoritative book. Over several years, he plumbed
the depths of the NSL's books, magazines and other material on
steeplechasing that date from Colonial days to the very latest
of information.
Winants
writes in the foreword: "I'd be less than honest if I didn't
admit that, for me, nothing can compare to the excitement and
beauty of steeplechase racing. To quench my thirst for this addiction,
I've watched innumerable races over the past 60 years, and I've
ridden in quite a few point-to-point races."
Steeplechasing
thoroughly covers the history and personalities of the sport through
Winants's eyes and mind as a journalist, photographer and participant
in racing. He shares many interesting stories of historical and
personal nature, and his superb photos draws even the casual reader
into the book.
