The National Sporting Library provides off-site reference and research service for requests submitted using this form. Research performed by Library staff in response to a request is limited to 30 minutes per request. Patrons who need to undertake extensive research should consider visiting the Library in person or employing a professional researcher.

All requests must include as much detail concerning the desired search as possible, including individual’s names, locations, and any known and relevant dates. If the patron is aware of likely sources of information in the Library’s collection, those sources should be listed in the request. Patrons should submit only one request at a time and should wait for a reply before submitting another. Staff will answer requests in the order they are received, except for official requests from state and local government offices and public libraries, or information requests from members of the general public who have an immediate financial or legal necessity, which take precedence over other requests.

The Library does not charge a research fee, however, we must charge for photocopies. Non-members are charged $1.00 per photocopy. Members receive the first ten pages free; each additional page is $1.00. We will include an invoice for any charges with the response to your request.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that that photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
