KING OF THE WIND
By Marguerite Henry
Illustrated by Wesley Dennis
Chicago: Rand McNally, 1948.

Cover of 'King of the Wind'

The National Sporting Library presented an exhibit in the fall of 2001, Inspired Animation: The Art Of Wesley Dennis. The exhibit displayed the original artwork of one of the 20th-century's best known illustrator of children's literature.

King of the Wind won the American Library Association's Newbery Award in 1949 and rightly so. Marguerite Henry extensively researched the life of the Godolphin Arabian, one of the three founding sires of the modern Thoroughbred racehorse. Henry weaves the great story of the horse known as Sham, and his constant companion and groom, Agba.

Wesley Dennis brought the story to life with his outstanding illustrations which capture the excitement, exotic beauty of the Middle East and the sometimes tragic story of Sham and Agba once they reach England. Dennis's artwork is precise in accuracy, and the expression and personalities of the horses, the cat and the people are so well done.
